Harry Nilsson 's writing and songwriting history prior to his first widely distributed album 's Pandemonium Shadow Show is more extensive than is Časlav Đoković - Volela Me Jedna Marija / Uželeh Se, Majko, Zagrljaja Tvog realized.
This minute bootleg might be unauthorized, but it does a fine job in assembling the most interesting of what might be called "ancient Nilsson. Not all of the Spotlight on Nilsson tracks were written by Nilsson -- it even included a cover of "Sixteen Tons" -- and, in an odder twist, only half the tracks on New Nilsson Songs were sung by Nilssonsome of those chores getting delegated to Jimmy CrossJean Kingand unidentified singers.
Nilsson didn't even write all of the songs, either, some of them being penned by arranger Perry Botkin, Jr. Highlights include an alternate version of "There Will Never Be" that's different from the one on his official debut album, and his own version of "The Story of Rock and Roll," which was covered by the Monkees. The CD presents historically important recordings that should be far more widely available than they are, and big Nilsson fans need to hear these to gain a full appreciation of his roots.
